The city of Granada holds one of the most visited historical Moorish sites in all of Spain – The Alhambra!
The Alhambra is an impressive example of Moorish architecture. Elements such as highly detailed decorative tiles, Islamic calligraphy, arches and repeated patterns influenced by the Islamic architecture that was developed in the Middle East dominates this monument complex. The Moors were Muslim who conquered the Iberian Peninsula and controlled what is now Spain, and Portugal.
Built near the end of Moorish occupation in the 14th century, the Alhambra served as a palace, a fortress and a citadel. It was the residence of the ruling Nasrid dynasty and one of the most well-preserved examples of Moorish architecture in the Iberian Peninsula. This captivating architectural wonder is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a must-see when visiting Granada.
Reading about the Moors and how they influenced the Andalucian region is what initially inspired me to visit Granada. After watching the South Korean drama series: Memories of the Alhambra (on Netflix). I was determined to pack my bags and go!
We only had a day to visit driving from Malaga. An easy day trip if you prefer to stay on the coast like we did. You will spend the majority of your day exploring the palace and its surrounding gardens. I would give Granada two or more days, if your schedule permits. This city may seem compact, but it really has a lot to offer. Staying at least two days will allow you to explore the Albaicín neighborhood, shop for Moroccan goods at the Alcaiceria near the Historic Center, and end your day with a trip to Plaza de San Nicolas for incredible views makes for a perfect itinerary of Granada. I would definitely go back to this city!
A word of advise, you must pre-plan your visit. Due to the limited number of visitors allowed especially the Nasrid palace. I would advise that you purchase your tickets in advance. The Alhambra tickets which is separate from the Nasrid Palace tickets are often already sold out weeks in advance. Buying tickets on site is almost impossible (unless you’re satisfied with just visiting the gardens).
